About CMHLP

Founded in 2007 and based at the Indian Law Society in Pune, the Centre for Mental Health Law & Policy (CMHLP) works with communities, governments, and global partners to advance mental health and suicide prevention. CMHLP develops and scales community-based interventions recognized by WHO and UNICEF for their impact. It has played a key role in shaping India’s Mental Healthcare Act (2017) and the first National Mental Health Policy (2014), and provides technical support to governments in India and internationally. CMHLP partners with state governments including Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha, helping integrate mental health services into public systems covering nearly 200 million people. Through specialized training programs, CMHLP builds the capacity of policymakers, researchers, healthcare providers, civil society organizations, and people with lived experience. Its work is grounded in rigorous research to ensure the effectiveness and sustainability of its interventions.
